Graviola has a long history of medicinal use. Some newly discovered, researched and verified active ingredients in graviola are a group of Annonaceous acetogenins which are only found in the Annonaceae family to which graviola belongs. These phytochemicals are being researched and patented around the world for their active biological actions and uses. The fruit and seeds of the Graviola plant are used for intestinal health and the elimination of parasites. Women eat Graviola (paw paw) to increase lactation; teas made from root and bark help as a sedative or nerve tonic and can maintain healthy glucose levels. Brazilians have used the bark, leaves, roots, fruit, seeds and flowers for thousands of years to treat everything from arthritis to liver problems. In Polynesia teas elevate mood and reduce depression.

What is Graviola
Graviola, is a tropical tree and can be found in North/South America including the Amazon, Caribbean and South East Asian Countries. Its scientific name is Annona muricata, other common names Soursop, Guanabana (Spanish), Pawpaw (Brazil), Guyabano (Tagalog),corossolier, guanavana, toge-banreisi, durian benggala, nangka blanda, sirsak, and nangka londa.[2] In Malayalam, it is called mullaatha, literally thorny custard apple. The other lesser known Indian names are shul-ram-fal and hanuman fal. In Sri Lankan mythology, Lord Rama and his disciple Hanuman are believed to have consumed this fruit on their way to Lanka. The Graviola tree commonly grows to about 5 or 6 meters in height and has large dark green, glossy leaves. The Graviola tree bears a large, heart-shaped fruit. The fruit, which is slightly sour but edible is frequently eaten straight from the tree or used in making various drinks or sherbets. Its flavor has been described as a combination of strawberry and pineapple with sour citrus flavor notes contrasting with an underlying creamy flavor reminiscent of coconut or banana.

All parts of the Graviola tree are traditionally used in natural medicines in the tropics. Graviola bark, leaves, roots, fruit and even the fruit seeds are believed to be beneficial so nothing is wasted. Different properties and uses are attributed to the different parts of the Graviola tree. The whole Graviola or Graviola fruit juice is used for worms and parasites, to cool fevers, for diarrhea or dysentery. The Graviola tree bark, leaves and roots are considered sedative, antispasmodic, hypotensive and for calming and it is frequently made into a tea for various disorders.

Research has indicated, albeit 'in vitro', that several of the active ingredients (Annonaceous acetogenins) kill malignant cells of 12 different types of cancer including:

Breast Cancer,Colon Cancer,Prostate Cancer,Liver Cancer,Lung Cancer,Pancreatic Cancer,Ovarian Cancerand Lymphoma

Annonaceous acetogenins are promising new antitumor and pesticidal agents that are found only in the plant family Annonaceae. Chemically, they are derivatives of long-chain fatty acids. Biologically, they exhibit their potent bioactivities through depletion of ATP levels via inhibiting complex I of mitochondria and inhibiting the NADH oxidase of plasma membranes of tumor cells. Thus, they thwart ATP-driven resistance mechanisms. This review presents the progress made in the chemistry, biology, and development of these compounds since December 1995.
